A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. Hebrews 1:8
A scepter is a rod or stick of a king that indicates authority. The speaker in Hebrews 1:8 is God the Father. He tells His son, the King Jesus, that His scepter is the scepter of righteousness. This would indicate that Jesus has a passion for the spread of righteousness—especially in the hearts of those in His Kingdom. Our motivation and power for the spread of righteousness come from King Jesus.
In light of 2 Corinthians 5:21, it is of no surprise that this passion would be in the heart of Jesus. The verse reads, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Jesus died that His followers might become the incarnation of the righteousness of God. Hebrews 1:9 says:
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.
Jesus is filled with joy as He administers the inflow of righteousness into the lives of believers. Verse 9 also implies that as we become filled with the righteousness of God, we will be anointed with the oil of gladness (joy) along with Jesus.
As Jesus oversees and administers the righteousness of God in us, we must cooperate with Him by receiving righteousness. Romans 5:17 says, “For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
We must continue to receive the gift of righteousness. We do so by living out the commands of Romans 6:11-13.
